Danish engineering company Rambøll has won the engineering project management contract for phase one of Ireland's first offshore wind farm. Project developer Eirtricity has applied for a lease to build 200 wind turbines on Arklow Banks in the Irish Sea. If the Irish Department of Marine and Natural Resources grants consent, work on the first phase of 15-25 wind turbines is expected to start in 2002. Eirtricity wants to build the 500 MW wind farm in annual stages over four to five years. Rambøll won the contract in a joint venture with Irish company Fehily Timoney Gifford and will be assisted by two other Danish companies: Tripod and the Zealand utility SEAS. It will carry out the concept design, tendering, contracting and supervise construction. Rambøll has already completed an environmental impact assessment.
