Enel Green Power, the renewable energy arm of Italian utility Enel, has reached an agreement with wind developer Eurus Energy Europe to acquire 50% of the rights for wind projects in the southern Italian region of Calabria. Eurus and Enel will jointly develop up to 400 MW of projects in the region, including 100 MW already at an advanced stage in the authorisation process. At the end of 2008, Enel Green Power had 381 MW of wind farms operating in Italy but none in Calabria. Since the first 6 MW wind farm was inaugurated in Calabria in 2006, the region has become one of Italy's most active for wind projects. Wind capacity in Calabria rose to 187 MW at the end of 2008 and the region's energy office is forecasting as much as 1450 MW when other projects already authorised are included. A heavily contested regional law approved in December set a cap on wind authorisations on Calabria's territory of 3000 MW. Eurus, a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Company and Toyota Tsusho Corporation, already holds 50% stakes in ten Italian wind farms with total capacity of 169.2 MW in the regions of Campania and Apulia.
