New university renewables engineering chair
West Australia's Murdoch University has established the country's first Chair of Renewable Energy Engineering with a five year A$900,000 endowment from the state's electricity retailer, Western Power, the West Australia Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) and Murdoch University. Western Power's Peter Winner says the chair is part of a move to establish West Australia as a centre of renewable energy expertise at a time when the Australian federal government is requiring the country's electricity industry to generate an extra 2% of its electricity from renewables by 2010. Western Power will contribute A$400,000, with the AEDB contributing $100,000 and Murdoch providing A$400,000 in-kind support. The money will be used for a post-graduate engineering program, according to Winner. Advertising will begin shortly for a suitable professor to fill the chair.
