Denmark's SSP Technology has signed its first turnkey contract with a Chinese firm. Under the deal it will supply Baoding Tianwei with moulds, tools and know-how for the production of 34 metre wind turbine blades. Tianwei's manufacturing facilities are in Baoding, 150 kilometres southwest of Beijing. Through its wind power technology subsidiary, it is developing a 1.5 MW turbine under a technology transfer agreement with Britain's Garrad Hassan from 2006. It has also worked with British transmission engineering consultancy and software developer Romax Technology on the design of the machine's main rotor bearing housing. The first prototype of Baoding's 1.5 MW turbine is expected early next year. It has also previously stated plans to develop a 2.5 MW unit. Earlier this year, parent company, Baoding Tianwei Baobian Electric, announced plans to establish a wholly-owned blade subsidiary, Baoding Tianwei Wind Power Generator Blade Company. SSP says it will provide the blade division with an "end-to-end solution" which includes manufacturing technology transfer, intensive training of staff, quality control, maintenance and full technical support. The Chinese firm hopes to develop its capability in two phases, each targeting annual production of 400 blade sets. "Together with our patented technical approach of root and spar production and funding from our investors, Ventizz Capital Fund IV of Düsseldorf and New Energies Invest of Basel, we will be able to expand our position as a leading system supplier of innovative blade technology," says SSP's Christoph Adrian.
