A non-profit group has started a five year feasibility study on the wind resource in north east Ohio near the shore of Lake Erie. A $40,000 grant from the George Gund Foundation has been awarded to Sustainable Energy for Economic Development, or SEED Ohio, for the study. SEED is funded by the Union of Concerned Scientists. A part time staff member has been hired and six anemometers have been installed, according to local newspapers. GTE has supplied towers for the monitoring and is donating power and its phone lines to collect the data, partly as the phone company might be able to use wind to power at its lakeside sites. More money is being requested for the installation of a pilot project of two or three utility scale wind turbines, local wind advocate Joseph Pustai told the Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria, Ohio.
