A planned 78 MW wind farm in western Japan, that would reportedly become the country's largest, has received the nod of approval from Shimane Prefecture governor Nobuyoshi Sumita, effectively allowing construction to begin as early as November. If so, operation of the plant will begin in the 2009 financial year. The new facility, provisionally named the New Izumo Wind Generator, is being built in Izumo City. Local residents had initially objected to the plant's 26, 3 MW turbines, arguing they will obstruct the view at Lake Shinji, but operator Shin-Izumo Wind Farm agreed to new locations or shorter heights for ten turbines.
