Siemens clinches deal for 500 MW Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm
Siemens Energy has won a EUR 84 million contract to connect the 500 MW Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm to the UK grid from turnkey contractor Fluor. Greater Gabbard is owned by Airtricity, the renewables subsidiary of Scottish and Southern Energy, and was jointly developed by Airtricity and Fluor. Siemens is also supplying the 140 wind turbines to be sited in the North Sea, 25 kilometres off the coast of Suffolk. Under the grid connection contract, Siemens will build two substation platforms offshore, housing the transformers and high- and medium-voltage switchgear. Three 132 kV cables will transport the power ashore to feed into the national grid near Sizewell.
