One year after its launch, the green electricity pricing scheme introduced by Dutch utility EDON continues to gather momentum. January figures show that 7500 of EDON's 90,000 customers have now opted to pay an additional NLG 0.04/kWh for electricity generated from renewable sources of energy. Moreover a recent survey shows that 80% of respondents in the Groningen area served by EDON in the north east of the country are familiar with the concept of "green electricity." Forty percent of respondents express interest in the product while 13% say they are prepared to pay more for environmentally friendly electricity. Under the EDON scheme, customers can choose whether to take 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of their total annual electric requirements from renewable resources. EDON owns the wind farm of Kenetech turbines at Eemshaven and a second wind plant in the Noordoostpolder. Currently it produces some 180 million kWh of green electricity annually. It aims to supply 25,000 customers by the year 2000.
