Electricity supplier Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and wind power group Eurus Energy Japan Corporation have announced they are indefinitely postponing a decision on whether to build a 37.5 wind farm in eastern Japan. The planned 25 turbines are slated to be installed before the end March 2007 in a mountainous area on Izu Peninsula, southwest of Tokyo. But local environmentalists have asked the national government to halt the project, concerned that it would harm marshlands and other ecosystems. A TEPCO group official says the area is "unmistakably suited to the production of wind power," and has promised to deal with the environmental concerns.
