Finland's capital, Helsinki, could get 10% of its electricity from offshore if a wind plant of 2 MW turbines was built, according to a study for the city planning department commissioned from Electrowatt-Ekono, reports the country's largest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat. With the aid of state subsidies, the estimated costs of offshore wind may not be higher than those of a new thermal power plant of similar size, write the study's authors. But the most valued residential areas of Helsinki are those with a view of the open sea and fierce opposition is likely. The city planning department says it will proceed cautiously.
