Vestas strengthened its foothold in the Spanish market last month with a 70.2 MW order from wind developer Generaciones Especiales (Genesa). It is the company's third Spanish order in as many months (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, April 2006). Vestas will supply 39, 1.8 MW machines for Genesa's Munera development in the province of Albacete, Castile-La Mancha. The news will be a blow for Spain's dominant turbine manufacturer, Gamesa Eólica, which until now has supplied all 124 MW of Genesa's projects, although it may not come as a surprise- -- in the past 18 months, control of Spain-based Genesa has shifted to Portugal's utility monopoly Energía de Portugal, a major Vestas client. Vestas will supervise plant commissioning for the Genesa project and provide its remote turbine and wind plant monitoring system. The project will be the third using Vestas technology in Castile-La Mancha. "We expect the region to continue growing strongly over the next few years," says Ebbe Funk of Vestas Mediterranean West. By the end of 2005, Castile-La Mancha was more than half way towards its 4000 MW by 2010 target with over 2000 MW of wind online.
