Utility Vien Energie founds renewable energy subsidiary

Vienna energy utility Wien Energie has founded a renewable energy subsidiary. The new company, Wienstrom Naturkraft, plans to raise the share of renewables in Wien Energie's mix to at least 400 GWh by 2008 from the today's 100 GWh, and will be investing heavily in wind. It has acquired Wien Energie's 40% stake in Zurndorf, Austria's biggest wind plant, where 13 turbines generate about 17 GWh a year, and says it will be developing a site near Parndorf, also in Burgenland.
