Officials from the European Commission's Environment Directorate (DG XI) were due to meet with others within the EC at the end of March to discuss what action should be taken in the wake of complaints by conservation groups about avian mortality at Tarifa in southern Spain (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, February 1994). According to a DG XI spokesman all options are still being contemplated, from an outright ban on expansion of the existing projects, a moratorium while research is carried out into the magnitude of the impact the Tarifa wind farms have on the resident and migratory fauna, or simply a reprimand. It seems unlikely, however, that there will be a requirement for the existing wind turbines to be dismantled. Further wind projects, proposed for installation this year at Tarifa by Abengoa Wind Power of Spain and Nordtank of Denmark, are reliant on funding from the EC.
