German wind turbine manufacturer Enercon is once again knocking on the doors of the Spanish market with plans to greatly increase the mere 104 MW it has turning in the wind sector's most active European market. According to the company's Thomas Barckmann, Enercon will be supplying around 650 MW of its 2 MW turbines for projects in the regions of Valencia and Andalucía during 2009-2010, with applications for 1500 MW in process for other regions. Some of that is wrapped up in an industrial investment plan for Galicia made jointly with clients in response to the regional government's 2350 MW call for proposals. Enercon has also responded to a 440 MW tender in the Canary Islands. Barckmann confirms the Spanish clients are mainly utility Endesa and Enerfin, the renewables arm of engineering group Elecnor. In Galicia, Enercon plans to invest -- 70.3 million in building three production units; one for producing aluminium, one for assembly mechanical processing and another for forging steel components. "That will allow Enercon to realise at least 1200 MW in the next years only in Galicia," says Barckmann, if it gets the go-ahead from the regional government. Enercon's commitment to supplying Enerfin's 356 MW development concession in Valencia goes back to a bigger agreement five years ago, before Enerfin split with Acciona, its partner in the region. That split means Enercon has downgraded its industrial plan in Valencia from a fully-fledged generator and nacelle facility to producing components and wind plant services.
