Three wind power companies in China's northwest autonomous region of Xinjiang are merging. Xinjiang Tianfeng Wind Power Company, Xinjiang Wind Power Plant, and Xinjiang Dabancheng Company -- all either previously owned or controlled by China's biggest wind player, Longyuan Electric Power Group -- say the move will accelerate the development of wind power. Upon completion of the merger, which is due soon, the new company will be responsible for the operation of the Dabancheng II and Urumqi Tuoli wind farms, which have a combined capacity of 120.3 MW, accounting for 63.3% of Xinjiang's wind power. A vast inland region of over 1.6 million square kilometres, Xinjiang has the richest wind resource in China. With five wind farms totalling 180 MW so far, the region tops China's list for wind development with 14.3% of the country's total 1260 MW installed capacity by the end of 2005.
