Zond and SMUD
Zond Corp is in more ways than one trying to fill the vacuum left by bankrupt Kenetech “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç. It is now emerging that Zond is seeking to build a wind plant with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in central Solano County, not that far from the 17 Kenetech turbines already owned by SMUD. In May the utility announced it was halting plans for a second 45 MW wind farm by Kenetech. Now Zond has entered the picture and awaits a decision on whether it can install six meteorological towers near Fairfield in Solano County. The company already has an agreement with the owner of the land, which is oddly enough a city in Silicon Valley. A decision on the met towers by Solano County in early June was delayed for 60 days because more information was needed, says Zond's Al Davies. A wind plant might be built there in conjunction also with Pacific Gas & Electric, or with SMUD, confirms Davies. "Those would certainly be two possibilitiesÉ but that's out in the future," he says. Over the years various attempts have been made to install wind plants near Fairfield.
