A request for tenders for the supply of a 1.5 MW wind turbine is in preparation at Energie-Versorgung Schwaben (EVS) in southern German. The company is now part of utility Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg. The machine, when it is installed, will be the largest wind turbine to turn in the inland state of Baden-Würtemberg and should generate about 2.4 million kWh a year. Theoretically this would cover the consumption of about 800 households, says the Stuttgart company. EVS has a budget for the new turbine of about DEM 3.5 million because it "wants to catch up with the latest technical developments in wind energy and test the machine in the conditions prevailing in its power supply area." Originally, EVS had hoped to install a 1.5 MW turbine next to two other wind plants at Heroldstatt. But the German armed forces vetoed the project because the turbine would have been located in the flight path of a military training ground. Planning permission was then granted in November to install the megawatt machine at another site in Gewann Kirchenfeld in the parish of Westerheim. Meanwhile the older turbines installed in 1989 and 1990 as demonstration and test projects -- an Enercon 80 kW machine and a vertical axis 50 kW Darrieus "egg whisk" model -- continue to do good service, says Brigitte Möck of EVS.
