The international divisions of Dutch wind turbine manufacturer NedWind and Zwolle-based utility EDON, reached an agreement with the Caribbean water and power company WEB Bonaire NV in early August to begin feasibility studies for the addition of some 7 MW to the installed wind capacity on the Caribbean island of Bonaire. The studies, due for completion in the next five months, relate to a proposed wind farm of NedWind turbines at Sorobon in the former Dutch colony. It is hoped the plant will be operational by 1998. The project will be financed jointly by EDON International BV and the local water and energy utility, WEB Bonaire. Together they plan to set up a company which will own, operate, and manage the facility. WEB Bonaire will buy and distribute the electricity generated, while NedWind Caribbean NV of Curaçao will be in charge of project development, turn-key delivery, and service and maintenance. For NedWind the project represents an extension of its activities in the Caribbean. In 1993 it set up a single 250 kW turbine on Bonaire and 12, 250 kW units in Tera Cora, Curacao -- the first large scale project in the region. NedWind Caribbean NV was established nearly a year ago as a joint venture with CMP Trading Services NV -- an affiliate of the Lucia Group Holding NV (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, December 1996). The Caribbean offshoot was charged with implementing an in-depth survey of the potential for wind development in the region. The Sorobon development is likely to be the first of a number of projects arising from that survey.
