New market record
A record amount of new capacity was installed in Germany in the first six months of the year, with 216 MW of wind turbines representing a 5.8% increase over the same period in 1995, hitherto the record year. Compared with last year, 30% more wind capacity went in the ground between January and June, reports the Deutsche Windenergie-Institut (DEWI), bringing total capacity in Germany to 1764 MW. The new capacity is provided by 360 turbines, a 12.2% increase in the number of units erected compared with installations during the first six months of 1996. The average size of turbines being installed in Germany is now 600 kW. Total investment in new wind plant was DEM 480 million, the institute reports. Over 4700 wind turbines have now been installed in Germany.
