Electricity from wind power plant overtook hydro last year to become the UK's leading renewable energy power source. Generation from onshore wind grew by 11% and from offshore wind by 20%, unseating hydro from its pole position, despite a record level for hydro generation in 2007. The generation data is contained in Energy Trends, an annual analysis of energy statistics published by the government. Overall, electricity from renewables rose to 5% of total generation in 2007, up from 4.5% the previous year. But in terms of total energy consumption from renewables, including for heat and transport, the UK languishes at just 1.8%, still a long way off its indicative EU renewables target of 15% by 2020.
