The letter from, among others, Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, actress Emma Thompson and novelists Antonia Fraser and Iris Murdoch draws attention to turbines that can be seen from Haworth -- one-time home of the Brontes. It also warns about applications to build further wind farms in the area and demands a moratorium on all wind projects within a 20 mile radius of Haworth. The local council has deferred a decision on applications for five more wind farms in the area to allow more time for public consultation.
High profile protests
Sixty-two members of the world of literature and the media have provoked a barrage of articles in the British press, including ill-informed editorials in The Times and Financial Times. In a letter to the Times Literary Supplement the 62 complain about the "assault on our literary and artistic heritage being perpetrated in the name of so-called environmentally friendly power generation." The nub of their complaint is the possible proliferation of turbines on the Yorkshire moors which provided the Bronte sister authors of the last century with inspiration for their most famous works.
