Following the opening of the Herbayum substation in Friesland (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, January, 1998), NUON is further expanding its grid capacity in Zeewolde in Southern Flevoland through the addition of a 50 MW transformer. When completed the new "wind-net" will offer virtually unlimited connection potential for new wind turbines, while the use of a 20,000 volt cable means that turbines can be connected to the grid within a 15 km radius of the substation without significant loss of power. The expansion will break with the utilities' usual "user pays" principle. The cost of the new net (NLG 5 million per substation) will be borne in the first instance by NUON, with the owners of individual wind turbines paying only for the share of a substation's capacity they actually use.
