Statkraft broke ground last month on a wind power project in the far north of Norway at Kjellefjord in the province of Finnmark. Sparsely populated Finnmark is considered to have some of the country's best wind resources, but the size of developments has been limited by lack of grid capacity, says the company's Jan Hågå. The 40 MW Kjellefjord project, scheduled for completion next autumn, will consist of Siemens 2.3 MW turbines -- the fourth time Statkraft has chosen Siemens (formerly Bonus) technology for a major wind project. The cost of the project is estimated at around NOK 400 million (EUR 51 million) and it has received NOK 83 million (EUR 10.6 million) in financial support from government agency Enova. Kjellefjord, Haga says, may be closely followed by another 40 MW project slightly further north in Finnmark at Skallhalsen if the license application, currently under appeal, is approved.
