AWEA'S EARTH DAY SHOPPING LIST
In recognition of Earth Day on April 22, the American Wind Energy Association recalls that: air pollution costs the US $11 billion yearly and 2000 premature deaths could be prevented if particulate air pollution were at California's legal level; about 50% of the 2000-3400 tons of mercury emitted worldwide comes from combustion of fossil fuels; new findings point increasingly to acid rain -- caused by emissions from power plants and cars -- harming forest eco-systems; that even the US government predicts carbon dioxide emissions will rise by almost one-third in the next 20 years as aging nuclear plants are replaced by fossil-fuel plants; and that a single 500 kW wind turbine can displace the emission of more than 800 tons of CO2 yearly, along with dozens of pounds of other pollutants.
