Substantial growth needed to exploit offshore wind
The exploitation of offshore wind power will have to increase rapidly in the coming years in Sweden if the government is to realise its aim of reaching 10 TWh by 2015, according to a new report. Boverket, the government agency for planning and building, highlights the need for substantial growth in two main areas offshore, Finngrunden and Kriegers Flak in the southern Baltic Sea. The report pinpoints nine locations where wind energy could best be harnessed with least environmental impact. Of these, Finngrunden, off the coast near Gävle, is labelled a prime position, since much of the site is not visible from the mainland and there would be minimal impact on bird and sea life. Finngrunden and Kriegers Flak could contribute a major portion of the 10 TWh target, the report says.
