The majority of Germans -- about 70% -- would be happy to contribute cash to support the use of renewable energies. Just over 30% of this group would be prepared to pay higher electricity prices to support renewables, while 56% would prefer to take a direct financial share in renewable energy projects. This readiness was even stronger amongst those with a higher income who already own shares. These were the findings of an Infas opinion poll of 1311 men and women in December and January. It was commissioned by renewable energies power producer, Wasserkraft und Regenerative Energieentwicklung (WER) of Frankfurt. The survey also showed that 75% were happy for privately operated renewable power projects to receive tax concessions and that 87% of those questioned blamed lack of utility interest for the insignificant role now played by renewables in the German power mix.
