Ecotècnia starts building export business in readiness for home market lull

Spain's third largest turbine supplier, Ecotècnia, is expecting exports to account for 16% of its turnover by 2004, mostly from orders in hand, says the company's Antonio Martínez. "Our main market is Spain, which has a high growth rate, but we realise that in four years growth will slow down, which is why we are looking for new markets," he says. Of the 453 MW the company has put on-line, only 3.2 MW has gone up outside Spain -- in India, Cuba and Japan. The most recent foreign sale went to Japanese developer Hitachi Zosen: a 640 kW turbine for the Ito Country Club. Ecotècnia's new development wing, Vendaval, is now probing deals in Argentina, Turkey, Portugal, France and Egypt. In the 2001-2004 period Ecotècnia projects its sales will increase from ESP 16.7 billion (EUR 100.4 million) in 2001 to 34.5 billion in 2004. Last year Ecotècnia installed 174 MW -- second only to Gamesa Eólica in Spain, which put up 623 MW. Ecotècnia turnover in 2000 was ESP 12.5 billion, 64% up on 1999.
