Taiwanese contractor Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation has won a tender from Taiwan Power Corporation (Taipower) to construct a 12 MW wind farm near Shinchu City in Taiwan. Spain's Gamesa will supply six 2 MW turbines for the project, which is to start commercial operation between May and July 2005. Once constructed, Taipower will own and operate the plant. This is the fourth wind power tender announced by government utility Taipower. Turbine suppliers for the previous three tenders are Vestas, General Electric and Zephyros (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, January 2004). Together, the four tenders make up the first phase of Taipower's ten year wind development program and will result in wind farms with a combined capacity of around 100 MW. A second 120 MW phase of development is also planned. This envisages more than 60 turbines, each rated at 2 MW or more, to be installed during 2006 and 2007. In total, Taipower hopes to see 200 wind turbines or 300 MW installed within the next ten years. The central government wants up to 1500 MW of wind power to provide 10% of total electricity supply installed on the island by 2020.
