Participants at AWEA 2000 conference
AWEA's annual conference was billed as a national affair, but fully 10% of the 825 people attending were from off US soil. The biggest foreign contingent were Canadians, where a growing industry was represented by the Canadian Wind Energy Association, headed by Fred Gallagher. Not only was Canadian wind represented, so too were the country's large hydro developers. BC Hydro and Hydro Quebec were looking to develop green products. Large European contingents came from Denmark, the seat of the world wind industry, Britain and Germany. Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, Armenia and Italy were also represented. Many travelling from Denmark and the UK were financiers, such as several from Fortis Bank MeesPierson in the UK and a lone representative from Unibank's corporate banking division in Denmark. A smaller contingent travelled from Guatemala and Brazil in South America, New Zealand and the Philippines in the South Pacific, and China and Japan in Asia. Rahul Amin, of the Sustainable Rural Energy Project in Bangladesh, probably travelled the farthest.
