Power distribution company EDON is investigating whether all the blades of the 94 Kenetech wind turbines in its Eemshaven wind plant will have to be replaced. The failure of two blades over the summer was originally attributed to damage from strong winds, but investigations at the Air and Space Travel Laboratory in Noordwijk have revealed that a construction fault was to blame, according to the Dutch national news service, AMP. Officially opened on May 30, the 21 MW Eemshaven wind farm with its 94 Kenetech 33M-VS(NL) turbines is one of the largest in Europe. The extent of the damage is expected to be known within a month. According to EDON's Jan Veenstra, "If the worst comes to the worst they will all have to be replaced." He says the costs of repair and replacement will be borne by the blade supplier. Veenstra, however, declines to name the blades' manufacturer, saying only that it is a European company.
