Goldwind, China's largest wind turbine manufacturer, last month announced contracts for more than 800 MW worth nearly CNY 5.2 billion ($761 million) for supply of turbines to seven wind farms in Guazhou county in the jurisdiction of the city of Jiuquan in north-western China's Gansu province. The company confirms it will supply 541 1.5 MW units with a combined capacity of 811.5 MW in 2009 and 2010. Goldwind declines to name the purchasers until the contracts are signed. China's other leading turbine manufacturers, Sinovel and Dongfang Steam Turbine Works, will also supply some of the seven projects, six of which will have a rated capacity of 200 MW each, with further projects in the series rated at 100 MW each. Goldwind is supplying all the turbines for three 200 MW projects and the 100 MW development and some units for other projects. Sinovel is supplying around 200 MW across two projects, while Dongfang is supplying 300 MW to another two. The capacity was awarded under a tender issued by the Gansu provincial government and approved by the National Development and Reform Commission for bids to develop 3.8 GW across 20 wind farms. This is just the first phase the planned Jiuquan Wind Power Base, which is targeting 10.7 GW of capacity by 2020. Although the full final results of the first tender are still unclear, the developers of the 20 projects - known to include State Grid Xin Yuan Co and China Huadian New Energy Development Co - have won a 25-year franchise to build, own and operate the wind farms. Construction of the first projects is due to start in October, with completion in 2010.
