The UK's first commercial megawatt class wind turbine has been given a resounding go ahead at Swaffham in Norfolk. Breckland Council unanimously approved the 1.5 MW Enercon E66 machine to be installed at the Ecotech business centre on the edge of town. "There was not a single dissenting voice on the committee," says Dale Vince from Enercon. He claims many local people are behind the project. Indeed, the local council received only three letters of objection. The machine is expected to be up and running before the end of 1998. It will be the first of four single turbines that developer Western “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç hopes to build in Norfolk. The three other projects are encountering considerably more local resistance.
