Wind biomass hybrid for hydrogen output
German renewable energy developer Enertrag, which operates around 500 MW of wind plant, has commissioned a wind-biomass hybrid power station which produces both electricity and hydrogen. The hydrogen will be used either as a transport fuel, for heating, or stored for producing electricity. The plant comprises a combined total of 120 MW of wind power and biomass capacity and features a 500 kW hydrogen-fuelled generating plant. "A complex data and controls technology has been developed that ensures production according to need," says the company. "The hybrid power station puts Enertrag in a position to deliver variable amounts of electricity, heat and transport fuel whether the wind is blowing or not." Hydrogen production on an industrial scale will begin in 2008 at a site near Prenzlau in the German state of Brandenburg, it adds.
