Southern California Edison (SCE) plans this summer to issue its third request for proposals (RFP) for renewable energy in as many years. It will be seeking about 730 GWh, but may contract for more or less depending on the merit of bids it receives. The RFP documents have been filed with the Public Utility Commission (PUC) for approval. Meantime, the company is inviting interested parties to submit inquiries and provide general information about possible bids in advance to facilitate preliminary transmission cost analysis. "We are on track to reach California's renewable power standard of 20% for utilities well ahead of schedule," says SCE's Pedro Pizarro. The utility currently operates 2588 MW of renewables, including 1021 MW of wind. Separately, SCE also announced it is considering issuing a request for offers (RFO) for contracts lasting up to ten years for new power plants that could be online between June 1, 2006 and August 1, 2008. If released, it will be open to both renewable and non-renewable power providers.
