An icon of Swedish wind power and one of the first wind turbines to be sited offshore anywhere must be dismantled in the spring, says its owner, German energy company E.ON. Erected in 1991 at Nogersund and named Svante, the Danish Windworld 220 kW turbine produced about 400,000 kWh annually before going offline a year ago. E.ON has tried to sell Svante to local electricity company SEVAB for a token one Swedish crown and even offered the cost to the company of tearing it down, SEK 1.3 million (EUR 143,000), to SEVAB towards its repair. But the slow wheels of Swedish bureaucracy stalled SEVAB's efforts to get a permit for running Svante before the end of 2006.
