Development

The pace of development continues to outstrip the industry's own predictions of just a few years ago. Installed capacity is over 6000 MW and the annual installation rate continues at 1250-1300 MW. Currently, Spain, Germany and Denmark are the most active markets. Britain's recent round of contracts for 800 MW and some 230 MW of utility contracts in the US Midwest should mean more activity in these regions by next year, but they are uncertain markets. The Indian market has yet to return to its 1995 buoyancy and might be hindered from doing so if the flow of foreign money at plausible interest rates fails to pick up. Other markets tipped for major projects are China, Egypt, Morocco, Cuba and South America, but only China is worth putting your money on. US figures in the table have been revised to account for decommissioning: the end-1995 total is now 1591 MW, giving a net loss in 1996 of 1 MW; 6 MW in Vermont is not included in the 1996 total as it is not in service.
