New draft guidelines for siting onshore wind turbines in Denmark have been recalled by energy and environment minister Svend Auken. The guidelines, for a proposed planning directive, were particularly directed at turbines over 90 metres high -- which Auken feared could begin to dominate the landscape (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, September 1998). The country's wind lobby protested that the guidelines had immediately put a brake on the permitting process for wind development -- even before becoming law. The protest prompted a meeting of the parliamentary energy cabinet, after which Auken dropped the proposal. But he stresses a new version will be released next year, reports wire service Ritzaus. The energy cabinet advises that future guidelines "must not be made in a way that stops new development in its tracks." In a joint lobbying effort, the Danish wind industry and the wind turbine owners association have ensured that all of Denmark's local and regional authorities are aware that the proposal has been recalled and that it can no longer be used as an excuse for not dealing with applications for new wind development.
