Science research funding in America is expected to continue to shrink over the next five years -- and new energy technologies are one of two areas of non military research that will experience the largest cuts, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The other area, also significant for wind energy R&D, is partnerships with industry to improve products, says the association. It predicts that funding for all federal science research will drop by 10% by the year 2002. Military research will get the largest cuts, but non-military will see a drop of 7.3% if President Clinton's proposal to balance the budget in five years is followed. "Science has been caught up in a suite of unrelated budget issues and we are being myopic as a society," says Jane Lubchenco, a zoologist and president of the association.
