German turbine manufacturer Enercon has gained a foothold in Andalucia, with four 2 MW machines now turning at the Luz de Viento Casares wind plant near Tarifa in the far south. The site's average winds of 8.3 m/s are enough for production of 30 GWh/year for 12,000 homes, says Enercon. The project was developer by Luz de Viento, a joint venture between Austrian businessman Karl Khevenhüller and wind developer Eólica Navarra. Although Enercon machines account for less than 1% of Spain's 10.7 GW installed capacity, the German company plans to build two facilities in the country. The first will be a nacelle factory in Valencia to supply equipment to Guadalaviar -- a 50-50 joint venture between wind two wind development majors in Spain, Acciona and Enerfin -- with which it has a 608 MW supply agreement. The second facility, a blade plant in Galicia, will supply an 850 MW framework deal in that region with Spain's top utility, Endesa.
