Pressure is growing for the creation of a single German transmission network company from the four that currently exist, with the aim of cutting costs for power consumers. Germany's energy networks regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur (BNA), reports that an initial investigation shows that running four zones for balancing supply of electricity with demand causes unnecessary costs, including for wind energy, running to a three digit million euro figure. Creation of a single balancing zone would be "a decisive step forward," says the BNA. Moreover, going a step further and setting up a single German transmission network company would bring about efficiency improvements "way beyond the synergies achieved in current co-operation between the four networks," it adds.
