With the assembly of the first of 18 Vestas 3 MW turbines at the 144 MW Pinhal Interior Wind Park in Alvelos, Portuguese renewable energy company Generg says it now operates more than 100 MW of wind plant. Pinhal Interior is due for completion at the end of March. Generg is also due to start work on the 50 MW Caramulo and Gardunha wind farms, which will bring its total installed wind capacity to 282 MW by the close of the year. Generg has plans to invest EUR 300-500 million in renewable energy up to 2011. "We are still in a phase of studying several markets," says the company's João Bártolo. These include Brazil, new EU member countries and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. In foreign markets, the idea is to make alliances with small investors. Generg is part of the Eólicas de Portugal consortium, headed by Portuguese energy group EDP, one of four companies competing for a contract under the government's 1000 MW wind tender. If Generg wins, it will need to invest around EUR 200 million up to 2010. Generg's shareholders are Lusenerg (57.5%), Belgian company Electrabel International Holding (10%) and Hidrobages (32.5%).
