Development rights for first big offshore project
The development rights for China's first big offshore wind project -- a 100 MW plant to be built near the north end of Donghai Sea Bridge in Shanghai -- has been awarded to a consortium comprising China Datang Corporation, China Power International Development, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding and Shanghai Green Energy Engineering. The consortium, which has been granted a 28-year concession right, hopes to complete installation of the 50 turbine project in 2009. Mindful that China's typhoon season already provides problems for inland coastal wind facilities and is likely be a threat to offshore wind farms as well, the National Development and Reform Commission hopes to gain experience from this pilot project in Shanghai in order to plan for future large scale exploitation of offshore wind energy.
