The Ministry of Non Conventional Energy Sources expects more than 5000 MW to be generated from the recently formed Solar Energy Enterprise Zone that lies across Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Barmer, mostly in the Thar Desert. The area receives more than six kilowatt hours per square metre of solar panels a day. A 200 MW solar chimney project is being set up by Energen International near Jodhpur. The unit will generate power by heating air in a vast 12 square kilometre "greenhouse," from which hot air will rise through the chimney turning a series of turbines mounted there.
