Facing a shortfall of 4000 MW of power, the state of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) recently raised its price for purchase of electricity from INR 1.25/kWh to INR 2.0/kWh ($0.065/kWh). Its wheeling charge remains at a 2% levy on this price. TNEB has also said that electricity sold from any wind power project of over 100 MW installed capacity will be paid for at its high tension purchase price, INR 2.10/kWh. The first wind power developer to benefit from this offer is the Natural Energy Processing Company (NEPC) of Madras. As well as operating a wind farm, NEPC, under the name NEPC-Micon, builds Danish Micon turbines in a joint venture with the Danish company and so far leads development of wind energy in southern India. Of the nearly 70 MW now operating in Tamil Nadu, some 30 MW has been supplied by NEPC Micon. (A full report of recent developments in India is planned for “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, September1994).
