There have been positive signals in the past few months from Canada and China, both of which might be joining the ranks of "renewables friendly" countries by installing significant wind capacity. Australia seems to be warming to wind, too. Globally, the enormous potential for off-grid power is becoming better understood and exploited, with an ever wider range of applications. On the other hand, R&D spending on wind will fall in 1996, according to the International Energy Agency. Member states will contribute $175 million, with the United States, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany topping the league. The money is spent mainly on machine development, siting and resource studies, and environmental studies.
