Communications firm Lemko India is making two prototype 2 MW wind turbines under a licence agreement with German engineering company Wind2Energy (W2E) for installation in the spring. One will go up in India, the other in Germany. It expects to sell ten units in 2009. The company is one of several licensees for the 2 MW W2E design. The German firm declines to name the others, saying only that its business model for the 2 MW design is to sign contracts with four or five licensees. The companies chosen, it says, provide some added value, like blade or gear manufacture for a wind project pipeline that could be of benefit to the other licensees. The Lemko Corporation, with headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois, specialises in areas that include cellular telephony for rural communities. If a W2E licensee wants to start production in a country where another licensee already has a factory, it has to pay a production fee to the company that is already there. There are no restrictions on where licensees can market their machines. "The market is so big that this is not a problem," says W2E.
