Eight of the 57 proposals received by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in response to its solicitation for 40 MW of renewables and 10 MW of photovoltaics are for wind projects. A shortlist of the projects will be taken to SMUD's directors' meeting on November 6, says the utility's Stephanie McCorkle. Utility staff then hope to present contracts to the board for consideration by next March. The 57 proposals, totalling 625 MW, are from 39 different firms. SMUD has upped its count of the number of proposals submitted from 49 to 57 as some were for more than one use. In addition to the eight wind proposals are six biomass, ten landfill gas, 11 geothermal, six hydro, three solar-thermal, ten PV generation and three for PV equipment. The solicitation, issued in March, is for capacity the utility expects to add at a rate of 10 MW yearly from 1998 to 2002. Most of the wind projects would use wind from land in the Montezuma Hills area of Solano County that is owned by SMUD.
