Applications are being invited for project proposals under the European Union's Altener programme for promotion of renewable energy. The deadline for submissions for this round of Altener funding is February 15. Applicants can receive subsidies of 30%-50% of the costs of the portion of their project which is eligible for support under the five year programme, which runs until 1997 (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, September 1992). Wind plant are not eligible for support under Altener, but several of the areas of activity which the programme is designed to promote have a direct bearing on wind development. These include development of European technical standards and local infrastructures, as well as collection of data for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of renewables. Priority will be given to applications which feature a multi-disciplinary approach, are relevant to all EU countries, work towards the EU's energy political goals, are likely to lead to further initiatives, and which make a considerable contribution to improving the environment. Altener's total budget for five years is ECU 40 million.
