Dutch project rights to Airtricity
The Dutch government has granted Irish renewables firm Airtricity exclusive rights to develop the West Rijn offshore wind farm site 40 kilometres off the Netherlands coast near Scheveningen in the North Sea. The proposed wind farm will have a capacity of 284 MW. Airtricity hopes to start construction in 2010. Several public hearings have still to be held before a final permit for the project is granted. Airtricity is believed to be investing around EUR 700 million in the project. The company is championing the concept of a "supergrid" under the North Sea to support 10 GW of wind development, but the Scheveningen project is not yet formally part of that proposal.
