New link connecting wind power from Tasmania

Wind power can now be exported from Tasmania to the state of Victoria on the Australian mainland. The world's longest underwater power cable is in operation following the official opening of the A$780 million Basslink. The 360 kilometre cable is a joint venture between Australia's National Grid and Hydro Tasmania. Ironically, Hydro Tasmania's joint venture wind developer, Roaring 40s, has just shelved plans for its Hemskirk project on the west coast of Tasmania, though its 120 MW Musselroe project is still on the cards. Basslink can export up to 600 MW of power from Tasmania to Victoria and import a maximum 480 MW into Tasmania.
